This place rocks.  Clear cut opening statement huh?  Seriously though.  My husband told me about the Petrol Station one day several months ago, as we are always looking for cool new places to try.  Okay sure let's go!  We have been regular patrons ever since.  The first couple times it was just him and I hanging out on their patio enjoying some brews after work or on the weekend.  Definitely a relaxing atmosphere.

This place is nestled in a primarily residential neighborhood- Oak Forest/Garden Oaks area of Houston.  This area of town is up-and-coming and nothing can stop it.  The homes are a wide variety of older and new construction but all well maintained nevertheless.  I like it because it is definitely the "Neighborhood Spot".

As you can see from the photo above its small, and they even rolled out the red carpet for you. :)  The inside is full of high tops, picnic bench style tables, and of course the bar. DUH! Get there early or no seat for you!  The seating is definitely competitive, but they do offer a really nice front, and back patio which are set with tables, umbrellas to help shade you, and most important.... FANS!  So you sweat your ass completely off. Or maybe you will.  Pit stains are acceptable here so no worries.

The beer is their number one offering.  They have a wide variety that is ever changing with the wind.  They like to keep it interesting and I can't blame them one bit.  Good luck finding any of these in a store. Specialty and special they are! Anything and everything from wheat brews, lagers and IPAs- they have something for everyone.  If your tummy starts grumbling you are in luck- they have a pretty nice menu of pub food favorites too.

My favorite?  Hands down the LAMBBURGER.  Now people I am a lady. (Stop laughing).  I am usually the grilled chicken sandwich with no mayo kind of girl. But this burger is the best I have ever had.  Big, thick and juicy- grilled to perfection.  Piled on a bun with lettuce, tomato, feta and tzatziki sauce! Combining my love for Mediterranean cuisine in a burger? Sold.  They also have other tasty treats like a Reuben, turkey sandwich and  pita and humus plate.  We met some friends here last night and 3 of the 4 of us ordered this very burger. I ate mine so fast I was ashamed.

We love the Petrol Station.  We feel lucky we discovered this hidden treasure, and will continue to drink the delicious beer and gorge ourselves on lamby burgers for as long as we can! Cheers!

Les Givral's Kahve

Date of Visit- Can't remember the first time, but I have been about 4 times since the New Year
$

So this place is one of my new faves.  Designed to show people you can get GOOD Vietnamese FAST... I think it does just that.  This place has it all.  A great bar area where you can enjoy a beer or a cocktail, a casual main dining area, and of course speedy service.  Everytime I have gone it has been a great experience.  Relaxing, comfortable and cozy.

If you like Pho- this is your Mecca.  Not sure if that is PC but it's true.  My man Sam, LOVES Pho... this means he could literally eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner about 5 days a week and not get sick of it.  Who knew a man could love soup that much??  But baby it isn't just "SOUP".  They have every type of Pho you could imagine.  Can't even list them all but here's the menu ---> (http://www.lesgivrals.com/).

The best thing for me on the menu (though I haven't tried it all ... yet) is the selection of Banh Mi. OH so good!  That bread.... flipping amazing.  All those yummy meat and veggies packed into a carb nightmare... best dream I have had in a long time.  Go- get one... Now.

Ibiza Food & Wine Bar

Ibiza Food & Wine Bar-----  I went to dinner here last night with a group of about 12 friends.  A mix of couples and singles we stretched a pretty long table by the back of the restaurant.  A string of about 5 tables put together neatly laid with white linens and flickering candles.  The light was dim but inviting and although the restaurant was packed, you were not overwhelmed with the obnoxious clatter of silver on plates.

The night started out great... yepp you know what that means... it started out wonderful, but didn't end on such a high point.  We ordered our cocktails and wine, and chatted and the mood was light as it should be on a Friday night after a long week.

The server presented the specials entirely too fast but we managed.  After placing our orders came the heavily anticipated bread course.  I don't care who you are, or what restaurant you are at EVERYONE looks forward to the bread. Dun-dun-dunnnnnn! It's there to comfort you and say, "Don't worry, have a snack and your delightful meal will be out shortly" with a smile of course.  The bread indeed lived up to the hype and the butter?-oh sweet Jesus the butter was out of this world!  We all savored our buttered bread, and thought "There is something in this butter, but I just can't put my finger on it". And then my friend did just that.  Cheese.  OF COURSE!  How could we not have known from the start? Some sort of Parmesan or close cousin was disguising itself.  We were glad.  It was a heart attack-packed delight.  Yum.

Our appetizer course arrived and I wasn't sure if the server had it right.  I had ordered crab bisque, but the bowl he presented me with contained a soup that from the color more closely resembled split pea.  He assured me it was the crab bisque and I saw that a couple others at my table had ordered and received the same.  OK- green Crab Bisque.  Now this was interesting!  And probably the best crab bisque I ever tasted.  It's pure fresh taste smothered my insides and the creamy richness of crab bisque as it should be enveloped my whole being.  I was in heaven.  I am not sure why people don't refer to crab bisque (or any other bisque for that matter) in the "Comfort Food" category right there with Mac 'N Cheese and Chili, but it sure as heck is comfort food in my book.

Our meals arrived and I had ordered a Chilean sea bass with a chutney sauce served over parsley puree with roasted vegetables.  I was going to dive right in!  The fish was perfection.  Buttery and light, flaky and moist.  It was wonderful.  The chutney however was almost non-existent.  I expected this mound of warm chunky chutney salsa smothering the fish exploding with flavor and highlighting the bass's own, but really it was a thin sauce with not that much to write home about.  I didn't mind. The fish is strong enough to stand alone, but it was kind of sad. The bass was lonely and I could tell.  I was a little skeptical about the parsley puree, but pleasantly surprised non-the-less.  The bass was perched on top of a small mound and it felt surprisingly guilt free compared to if it been served with mashed potatoes instead.  I always look forward to the veggies.  Not this time.  It was nothing more than some wilted leeks with a few brussel sprouts thrown in.  Brussel sprouts?  How did the server not warn me about this when he read the special??  Or maybe he did, and was just talking to damn fast?  Yepp that had to be it.  I am NOT a picky eater, but come on now.  There are a few vegetables that the majority of the world doesn't like, and sorry little brussels you are at the top of that short list.  For good measure I did try one of them.  It had been ages since I actually ate a brussel sprout but it only confirmed my previous feelings.  I am not a fan.

As always we stuffed ourselves with bread, appetizers, and full plates, which scarcely left room for the best part- DESSERT!  Thankfully a friend at the table ordered 4 different choices for all of us to indulge in.  Wow. Amazing.  Genius.  Can I tell you that I love Carrot Cake?  Can I tell you that I love the cream cheese frosting even more?  It is so yummy I would be OK eating just that for the rest of my life.  This version was marvelous.  Two petite triangular wedges of moist and spicy cake, married to thin layers of cream cheese sin?  If that doesn't make your taste buds sing to the Heavens above I don't know what to tell you.  To top it off it was presented with a scoop of what seemed to be blood orange sherbet. Homemade? Possibly. Fantastic.  The other sweet treat I sampled was a warm chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream and Carmel drizzle.  The cake was so rich, and the creamy vanilla cut in so well it was obviously destiny.  Clearly.  Out of the four desserts I limited myself to two (aka I couldn't reach the other two).  Someone has to draw the line with me and desserts.

We were all satisfied and feeling overcome by post feast sleepiness, or as I like to call it, the "Itis".  Now let me preface this paragraph by saying that since we were in such a large party combined of couples and singles, we requested at the beginning of our meal that we have separate checks.  Now I know as I was a server for four years during college that sometimes this can be a royal pain in the elbow, but with 12 in our party it probably would have only been 6 separate checks, not 600.  Not the end of the world.  To our request our server replied: "Oh, sorry our system doesn't allow for that."  Excuse me?  Your system doesn't allow separate checks?  Somehow this is hard for me to wrap my noggin' around.  Your system allows for separate tables, separate parties, so there fore it MUST allow separate checks.  OK splitting ONE table into separate checks, well that shouldn't be that hard either.  Most restaurants these days are equipped with electronic POS systems(Point of Service, people- though sometimes they really are P's OS that is beside the point), and it is mind boggling that the systems in place at Ibiza seems to have left out the functionality for separate checks.  Bizzarre.

(Count the times I write "Separate" in the paragraph above.  Hilarious.)

So we all get out our credit cards and cell phone calculators.  I am not one to say just split it evenly, because we all did not consume evenly.  Some are couples, some are singles, some ordered appetizers or alcohol as where others didn't- you get it.  Even if it is easy, it isn't fair.  So we all calculate what we owe.  All the while, our pest of a server is hovering like a shadow over our table.  He even tried to pick up the bill and ask if we were done not once but TWICE when clearly people were still examining the bill.  I mean did you think it would be easy for us to calculate from one grandiose bill?  What would have been easy would have been.... you guessed it! SEPARATE CHECKS!!!  Which we asked for.  And were denied.  Really unbelievably tacky.  That pretty much ruined it all.  Ruined the crab bisque, the lovely sea bass, the desserts, the BUTTER oh the butter!! It was all forgotten.  I could only focus on the man who was stalking our table, and how he needed a private lesson from Emily Post.

We were kind enough to arrange our credit cards in order with a list of credit card names and amounts to charge.  Needless to say he screwed it up.  While consulting my online banking, me and my spouse were charged $27 dollars MORE than what we should have been.  We took the time and effort, and clearly he couldn't.  My theory is that this particular server COULD (caps, bold and italic- that means I mean business)have split our bill easily but didn't want to because then he wouldn't be able to add the 18% tip for a large party.  I am and always will be a generous tipper, as are our friends.  Most if not all have worked in the restaurant industry, and even one in our party last night has a family who owns several high-end restaurants in Houston.  He missed out on an extra 2% from our side.  He refused to split the bill (I am convinced it was possible), then was impatient waiting for us to calculate our totals, mis-charged me (and probably others), AND lost out on 20% tip versus the 18% he added himself.  It would have been a heck of a lot easier, and he would have made out on top tip wise had he just split the damn bill.

I enjoyed my meal at Ibiza.  It was a relaxed and inviting environment, which I shared with great friends.  But unfortunatley some things I cannot stand.  Bad customer service is one of them.  Especially when you are dropping a good amount of moo-lah.  So because there is such a wide variety of dining establishments to choose from here in Houston (and throughout the world), I am saying it might be a while before I return to Ibiza Food & Wine Bar.

Back On the Chatter Wagon

Hey y'all so its a new year, and just like my personal blog (http://kbrookesunshine925.blogspot.com/) I am upping the anty.  I am getting back on the ol' chatter waggon, whatever that is, and starting to write again.  Mostly because it makes me feel great, and I have no other hobbies that I love quite as much.  Although sweating at the gym for 2 hours does make me feel warm and fuzzy inside, it also makes me feel nauseous.

So 2011 is going to be a wonderful year filled with lots of good eat!  So get your drinking and eating boots on it's gonna be wild.  :) ENJOY

Le Peep

Date of Visit: June 12, 2010
$

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Whether you are curled up on the couch with a bowl of Cheerios, at work with your Chobani Greek Yogurt (my personal favorite!), or tasting the best Dim Sum you've ever had- it doesn't matter. Nourish your body and fuel your day.

I fell in love with old fashioned Greek Diners a long time ago. When I was a kid our family would visit the Halfmoon Diner on Sundays after church. This place did killer business, especially at that time. Still they managed to serve up gigantic portions of the best French Toast, omelets and Eggs Benedict I'd ever tasted in what seemed like minutes after placing your order. The fast paced atmosphere and the ::clink clink:: of silver against plates didn't phase us a bit. Or any of the other patrons for that matter. Being there with the ones you love after church or at any other time is for some reason comforting. The people serving you aren't just college students trying to make a buck (and believe me there is nothing wrong with that I used to be one!), but you know they are hardworking and real.

In New York it seems like you are never too far from a great Diner. Here in Houston you know its all about the BBQ. I've seen a couple closed down and boarded up buildings that looked like they were once the type of diner I am talking about. Not sure if it was the shiny mirrored exterior that gave it away, but I was sad to see this. Never-the-less the closest thing I have found to my old staple diner, is Le Peep.

A little more corporatized than Theo and Zoe's place but still homey. Clean and well presented. Both times I have dined here the staff exceeded my expectations in friendliness and attentiveness. Also real people working hard for their money, the people and atmosphere are comfortable and honest. The menu has many options which you are sure to find something you love. The Granola Pancakes... amazing! The servings are more than generous so you won't leave hungry either. I couldn't imagine taking down the entire stack of 3 enormous 10 inch cakes. Another thing I love- is the pot of coffee and craft of ice water that stays put on your table. There is no waving down the server, or on the flip side the server racing around to make sure that everyone is topped off. Self service can be the best kind of service. Fresh fruit that is actually fruit and reasonable prices. Le Peep is at the top of my list for breakfast joints to revisit!

Brunch @ RDG + Bar Annie

Date of visit: Sunday, May 23, 2010
$$

One of my all time favorite meals is brunch. Not quite breakfast, and not quite lunch. A careful blend of the two, where sweet flavors of butter and sugar meet the boldness of hearty ingredients more commonly associated with lunch or dinner. It really is the best of both worlds if you ask me.

In every city there are small empires built by entrepreneurs who can't resist the taste of a new business venture. They start with one idea and it quickly grows until they become embedded in the surrounding metropolis. It's inspiring and lovely to see; visions coming to life and dreams being realized. The Schiller Del Grande Restaurant Group is one such entity.

There wings stretch straight across Houston, Texas making their presence undeniable. With establishments such as: Taco Milagro, Cafe Annie, Cafe Express, Rio Ranch and The Grove- their newest addition with its ever growing popularity is RDG + Bar Annie.

I plan on dining at each establishment and will complete a separate critique for them all. This particular review is based solely on RDG and the unique brunch experience that they offer.

The atmosphere is definitely sophisticated so dress to impress. Sunday's Best will do, and just so happens I was there on a Sunday. You enter through large glass doors into the mod downstairs bar area. Casual and cute, definitely an after work hot spot to grab a drink and forget about your day. Upstairs you feel like you have entered an entirely different restaurant. Rich fabrics with gold brocade meet spa inspired craftsmanship. Light bamboo ceilings draw you in while dark functional works make a statement. Statues, and indoor garden plants create a space that is undeniably homey, but upper class.

The brunch menu is rejuvenating. Chic, classic and down-to-earth. There is something for everyone. Seafood lovers will feel right at home with dishes such as the smoked fish platter or ceviche. Fresh, tropical ingredients: avocado, jicama, grapefruit all reminisce of dining at a 5-star resort. They don't neglect the obvious either- Tex Mex inspired dishes have a heavy presence. Me being the sucker I am for such, I ordered Mimi's Rolled Taco's : scrambled eggs, with refried beans, avocado and chilies. While I waited for this scrumptious plate, we indulged on the homemade donuts. As a kid my favorite was the sugar donut and I was pleasantly surprised with these little dough balls of heaven. Lightly fried and tossed in cinnamon and sugar. Your mouth will ask for more! The taste of butter and sweetness and the ever familiar crunch of sugar granules. YUM! The perfect appetizer!

The main dish was just as decadent as I expected. Three petite rolled tacos with a side of sliced avocado. Avocado is one of my favorite veggies, and it was refreshing to see it not mixed in to or lost with anything else, but in its natural naked state. A sprinkle of sea salt and it's just Divine! Mimosa's (regular or blood orange) and rich coffee bring this experience full circle. This feast of sweet and spicy is a compliment to any Sunday. Its calming and invigorating all in one happy meal.

Ruggles Green

Date of Visit: Saturday, May 15, 2010
$$

A male co-worker told me about Ruggles Green spouting: "You've got to try it! It's all 'Green', and organic... Its so something you'd like. Even the straws are made of some plant." I guess people really have my MO don't they?

I enjoy the green, organic, and eco-friendly movement... It's inspiring and great for our community and world. There is no bigger turn off for me than mass-produced, over processed food. Or clothing, or anything. If you can make it Green I like it already.

I like to eat healthy, but also consider myself somewhat of a food aficionado. I savor every bite if its delicious, and always give the not so enjoyable dish a fair go as well. One thing I know is you don't need to compromise taste for health ever. Ruggles Green is proof of that.

I decided to make the trip to Ruggles not only for the sake of my curious pallet, but for my friend Cara's as well. Cara is one of my dearest friends from New York. She currently resides in Tucson, Arizona and was in town for a weekend visit. Cara has suffered from a gluten allergy for as long as I've known her. She constantly battles with not being able to enjoy the deliciousness of bread, or anything with bread or flour in it. When I told her that I had heard of this restaurant that has a variety of Gluten-Free menu items she was delighted.

As we approached the door people were spilling out the door. The closer we got though, we realized it was just a large party loitering and saying their Good-Byes, which made the fear of a nasty line vanish. Once inside, we were greeted with clean rustic wooden tables, and friendly earth tones. It was busy, but I could see we would have no problem finding a seat. We took our time looking at the menu and Cara quickly was ecstatic over the number of Gluten-Free options. Pizza! Pasta! You name it! I don't think really knew what to expect, but with such a variety to choose from she decided on a Margarita Pizza. "I never get to have pizza," she said. I ordered a Texas Ceasar salad and the Spicy Shrimp Tacos. Self serve drinks, utensils, and napkins- fine by me. And if your in the mood, you can enjoy a cold beer here too.

We found seats on their enclosed patio. Our food came out fast and hot. What more could you ask for? The ceasar salad was refreshing. The perfect amount of dressing coated the crisp romaine leafs, and tasty caper surprises could be found hidden throughout. The dressing had a slight anchovy aftertaste but was accompanied by a zesty southwestern bite. The shrimp tacos were even more satisfying. Plump shrimp mixed with lettuce, pico de gallo, and topped with a red spicy sauce gave just the right amount of heat. (4) to a plate this is plenty for a meal, and would make a great appetizer to share.

Cara couldn't stop raving about her pizza, and I'll admit it looked pretty damn good. She offered me up a slice from her generous 12'' personal pizza, and I accepted! One-bite and I was sold. Fresh marinara topped with mozzarella and springs of basil. Perfectly crisped crust too! Gluten-Free? You wouldn't be able to tell. I couldn't! For a small girl she took down the whole pizza (minus my slice). She must have told me a hundred times how good that pizza was, and how happy she was that she wouldn't be affected by eating it (as she normally would be with regular pizza).

We left feeling full, and healthy. A clean, and relaxing environment, Overall a great experience at Ruggles Green.
